A white man said he felt unsafe, so he walked up to a Black Latino Teen who was listening to rap music and slit his throat.
A teen was listening to rap music, and Michael Adams, 27 walked up to the boy and slit his throat at about 1:45 am at a Circle K.
The unnamed victim walked outside and collapsed. The teen was then brought to a hospital where he died. The incident happened in Peoria Arizona on July 4th.
The teen was listening to rap music close enough that Adams could hear it. Adams told police that he felt unsafe after “once getting attacked by people who listen to the genre”.
Adams told investigators that the teen didn’t say anything to him nor did he provoke him in any way, but he felt he needed to slit the teens throat to prevent the teen from attacking him.
According to his attorney Jacie Cotterell, he suffers from mental illness and he was in jail before but was released without medication.
Cotterell said during Adams court appearance:
“They released him to the streets with no medication, no meds, with no way to care for himself. This is a failing of the Department of Corrections. This is easily foreseeable and that is an issue.”
According to court records, Adams had been arrested with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon twice before.
Adams is now back in jail with a cash bond set for $1 million.
A candle and balloon were placed at the scene of the crime in memory of the victim.
Update, the teen was identified as Elijah Alamin:
