A man from New York has been sentenced to 8 years in Jail for strangling and beheading a woman in Japan.
Yevgeniy Vasilievich Bayraktar, from Long Island New York, admitted to strangling a woman a Japanese woman.
He admitted he strangled the woman to death in February 2018.
Bayraktar rented an apartment while sightseeing in Japan. He used a dating app and met Saki Kondo, a 27 year old Japanese woman.
Bayraktar, 27 years old, was not indicted for murder in the case, because prosecutors say they couldn’t prove that his intentions were to murder the woman. He was charged instead with Manslaughter and abandoning a body.
After strangling Saki Kondo, Bayraktar went to buy a saw, and beheaded the woman’s body, and dismembered other parts of her body.
Her head was found in a suitcase inside the apartment he rented. For the rest of the body, he buried her body parts across different cities in Japan.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that he intentionally covered his tracks by deleting the Tinder app he found Kondo on, buying a saw, and researching “How to dismember a human body” on his phone. Prosecutors were originally arguing for a 13 year sentence.
Kondo’s father told Japan Today that an 8 year sentence was not enough for the death of his daughter.
“The sentence is too light and the truth remains unknown,”
Bayraktar’s lawyer argued for a 5 year sentence, saying that 5 years was enough because he was remorseful for his actions.
Bayraktar said in court,
“I will be burdened with this crime until the day I die. I am so sorry.”
