News networks in Brazil are announcing inmates have overtaken prisons in Brazil and managed to escape.

The break reportedly happened after guards announced visitations were cancelled and other new restrictions.

The inmates reportedly managed to overtake the guards and hold them hostage, and the prisoners overtook the prison and all left.

It’s not yet clear if they’re infected with the virus or not.

Here are the videos:

According to reports the breakouts happened in three different prisons.

The Militarized Police (PM) of Sao Paulo indicated that at least 400 prisoners escaped from Mongaguá, on the state coast, about 8 hostages were reported.

Another 926 in Mirandópolis, and another 30 from Taubaté, in the region known as Vale do Paraíba.

The Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration (SAP) said in a statement (translated):

“Acts of insubordination are occurring in the Centers of Penitentiary Progression of Mongaguá, Tremembé and Porto Feliz, in addition to the half-open wing of Penitentiary II of Mirandópolis, due to the suspension of temporary departure, which would occur tomorrow [Tuesday 17th].

Both the Rapid Intervention Group (GIR) and the Military Police have been activated and are taking care of the situation.

The story is still developing.
