R. Kelly was charged for using bribes to marry 15-year-old Aaliyah.
On Thursday, R. Kelly was indicted by federal prosecutors in Brooklyn of bribing an Illinois government official in order to obtain a fake ID for Aaliyah, who was 15 at the time.
The fake ID was then used to obtain a marriage license that listed 15-year-old Aaliyah as an 18-year-old.
Here’s their marriage certificate:
#BREAKING: singer R. Kelly has been hit with a superseding indictment adding 1 act of racketeering/bribery for allegedly getting a fake id for Jane Doe #1. The act dates back to August 30, 1994 – a day before he married late singer #Aaliyah, who was then 15 years old. #RKelly pic.twitter.com/e8QT05KeET— Marta Dhanis (@MartaDhanis) December 5, 2019
For all these years people were wondering how R. Kelly got away with marrying her, and if justice would ever be sought.
This new allegation is added on the existing racketeering indictment against R. Kelly that accuses him of sexually exploiting underage girls and raping them.
This year, in an interview with ABS’s Good Morning America, R. Kelly’s lawyer his client had “no idea” Aaliyah was 15 when he married her.
Earlier this year documents were found that suggested R Kelly was beating Aaliyah and caused physical harm during their marriage.
Jim DeRogatis is a reporter who pursued the physical abuse allegations against R Kelly. He appeared on the New York Times’ podcast series The Popcast with host Jon Caramanica.
During the podcast he talked about how he first went through Aaliyah and R Kelly’s marriage annulment,
“The annulment of the Aaliyah marriage and Aaliyah’s legal claim against him had been sealed in Detroit…they were sealed by the court but those documents were provided to me. It’s a harrowing document, a non-disclosure agreement on both her part and Kelly’s, vowing not to pursue further legal claims for physical abuse. So it wasn’t just an underage sexual relationship, he hit her, allegedly, according to that court document.”
During their marriage, he allegedly caused her physical harm and had them sign non-disclosure agreements that prevented her from pursuing any legal action for physical abuse. Aaliyah was 15.
