A boy from Baltimore Maryland is now the national chess champion

Cahree Myrick is the best in the country after taking home a mega-trophy from the U.S. Chess Federation’s National Tournament.

Myrick, a 7th grader who attends Roland Park Middle School, started chess as just a hobby, worked hard everyday to achieve excellence.

He said:

“I remember the first thing we learned was how to move the pawns,”

He entered the U.S Chess Federation’s National Tournament, and won. When he won he told reporters;

“I expected to do well, but I didn’t expect to win the whole thing,”

After school the Roland Park Chess team practices 4 days a week, and their coach gives them homework to stay sharp.

He told reporters that his favorite part of chess ks the strategy, saying:

“I think [my favorite part is] practice and studying the board,” Myrick said. “Because in order to be successful, you need to know tactics, you need to know all of the rules.”

Myrick plans on continuing to improve, and achieving even higher levels and goals.
