A teenager committed suicide after Instagram users voted in a poll.
A 16 year old from Malaysia who was very depressed started a poll, asking users which one should she choose between: Death or Life.
The anonymous users voted on the poll in favor of her death.
Police Chief Aidil Bolhassan told news outlet Reuters that 69% of the girl’s followers voted in favor of her death when she took her life.
The poll was titled,
“Really Important, Help Me Choose D/L”
Instagram reviewed the post and found that it ran for 24 hours. The post results then changed to 88% in favor of L(Life).
Wong Ching Yee, the head of communications at Instagram in the Asia-Pacific said that numbers may have changed after news of her suicide spread.
Malaysian lawmakers have urged officials to pursue a criminal investigation into the matter. Under Malaysian law anyone convicted of abetting the suicide of a minor could be sentenced to death or face up to 20 years in jail.
Ramkarpal Singh, a member of parliament told Free Malaysia Today:
“Would the girl still be alive today if the majority of netizens on her Instagram account discouraged her from taking her own life? Would she have heeded the advice of netizens to seek professional help had they done so?”
Instagram has offered its condolences to the girl’s family.
