A man named Rashidul Islam was jailed after calling in a bomb threat to try and delay a flight he was going to be late for.
Rashidul Islam was late for the EasyJet Gatwick to Marrakesh flight and decided to anonymously call the police 45 minutes before it was due to take off.
All the passengers on board were evacuated from the plane.
When he called, he told police:
“EasyJet flight 8897 leaves in 40 minutes. There may be a bomb on the plane, you need to delay it, you need to stop it now.”
He made two more threats in the following minutes.
The 32 year old London citizen was jailed for 16 months at Lewes Crowne Court.
When Islam turned up late for check-in, inquiries revealed his mobile number was the same number used to make the hoax call.
When Islam was detained, he said he panicked that he would miss his flight because he wouldn’t be able to afford another ticket.
The flight was detained for 3 hours, and the cabin crew was also switched after exceeding their work hours after the delay.
Following his arrest, all bags were still rescreened.
