A 22-year-old woman fell 40ft to her death trying to sit on the edge to get a cuter pic for Instagram.
Sydney Paige Monfries was rushed to a local bronx Bronx hospital in serious condition.
She had fallen 40ft from Fordham University’s bell tower early Sunday morning.
The New York police says Monfries went to the Keating Hall clock tower with her friends around 3am.
One of the students named Anne told Police:
‘I think they were posting on Instagram when it happened.’
Police say that Monfries died trying to get a better picture of herself with the city’s skyline for instagram.
School President Joseph McShane said:
‘It is with great sadness that I report that Sydney Monfries, a senior at Fordham College at Rose Hill, died today after sustaining a fall inside the Keating Clock tower in the early hours of the morning.
‘Our hearts go out to Sydney’s parents, and her family and friends—theirs is an unimaginable loss, and we share their grief.
‘There are no words sufficient to describe the loss of someone so young and full of promise — and mere weeks from graduation. Fordham will confer a bachelor’s degree upon Sydney posthumously, which we will present to her parents at the appropriate time.’
Monfries fell through an opening on the first landing of the tower and struck her head on the ground.
Paramedics were able revive her though her vitals had flatlined.
She was taken to the hospital where her parents brought two priests along with them to pray for her.
She died died that morning.
Students said that she was participating in a “Rite of passage” event or ceremony.
The school’s paper wrote an article in 2013 stating that the Gothic Granite building is off limits and students are forbidden inside, and those who break that rule would likely face disciplinary action if they entered it.
The university said in a statement to students earlier in the day:
A Fordham student was critically injured in a fall from the clock tower in Keating Hall at approximately 3am on Sunday, April 14, 2019.
‘The student, a senior at Fordham College at Rose Hill, was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, and the student’s family has been notified.
The student apparently climbed into the clock tower with friends. University officials are investigating how the students gained access to the tower.
